Football: Verona Crushes West Side 56-6

VERONA, NJ – Verona Hillbillies won their sixteenth consecutive game on Saturday when they blew by West Side 56-6 at home. 

Verona took the lead on their first possession and never looked back.  By halftime the Hillbillies held a comfortable 42-0 lead. 

TAPinto Verona/Cedar Grove’s Verona Athlete of the Week Mark Riggio had 11 carries for 170 yards and two touchdowns.  Quarterback Zack Zaccone threw for 108 yards and two touchdowns including a 48-yard touchdown pass to receiver John DeMartinis at the end of the first quarter.

Sophomore C.J. Lavery took over for Zaccone in the second quarter and increased Verona’s lead with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Collin Kiernan, which was followed quickly by another touchdown by Sean Crawford on a 40-yard run. 

Zaccone went back into the game in the final minutes of the half finding DeMartinis again with a 60-yard touchdown pass.

West Side was finally able to put some points on the board in the fourth quarter on a kickoff return, but missed the extra point.

Verona travels to Newark Friday to take on Shabazz at 7 p.m.

Team Veronica Holds "Be the Match" Drive

Team Veronica is coming to a town near you!

Veronica, is a seven year old, who needs a bone marrow transplant. 

Be The Match is a national registry for finding a match(es) for a bone marrow transplant. It is a simple swab test of the inside of your mouth.
