ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – A total of four wrestlers represented Cedar Grove and Verona High Schools in the 2017 NJSIAA Individual Wrestling State Championships at Boardwalk Hall this weekend.
Jimmy Loudon (Verona – 120 pounds), Anthony Clarizio (Cedar Grove – 126 pounds), Frank Gabriele (Verona – 132 pounds) and Daniel Diprenda (Cedar Grove – 182 pounds) were each part of the 448-member field in this year’s tournament, the largest group of wrestlers to compete in New Jersey state tournament history.
For Verona, both Loudon and Gabriele lost both of their first round championship matches, as well as their lone consolation bouts.
Clarizio led the Cedar Grove contingency on a potential run to the consolation final round but he was ousted from the tournament one win shy of medal contention. After splitting his Friday night matches, Gabriele made a run in Saturday’s consolation bracket, winning his first two matches before losing just shy of the final eight wrestlers.
Diprenda lost his first round match on Friday night. Wrestling in the consolation bracket on Saturday, Diprenda won his first wrestle back match before losing his next bout to end his tournament run.
