NUTLEY, NJ - The Friends of the Nutley Public Library are celebrating Nutley’s rich heritage in the arts by inviting artists to a one-day plein air painting event at Kingsland Park on Saturday, April 29.

Registered artists will paint from 8:00 a.m.to 3:00 p.m followed by a wine-and-cheese reception to be held at the Kingsland Manor from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Paintings will then be displayed and available for sale. This is a great opportunity to expand your art collection while helping the Friends to support the Nutley Public Library.

According to the National Register of Historic Places, in the early twentieth century, there were more noted artists and writers in Nutley than in any other community in New Jersey, with the possible exception of Montclair. Plein air artists are again being welcomed to set up their easels and paint one of Nutley’s most scenic park landscapes. Plein Air means “in the open air,” a French term that became linked with painting after the invention of the tube container when artists could work outdoors using the natural light of the sun.

Artists from throughout northern NJ are anticipated to speedily work their canvases for a good cause.  Visitors are welcome to come early and watch the artists at work.  An exhibition and sale of paintings will take place at the evening reception to be held in a 1700’s colonial homestead overlooking the Kingsland Falls. Come and see beautiful artwork, hear live music, and celebrate spring in this pastoral setting.

Tickets to the wine-and-cheese reception are $20 per person and may be purchased at the library prior to April 29.  Tickets purchased at the door of the event will be $30.  Only 100 reception tickets will be sold.  Monies raised will be used to support the library’s semi-annual book sales, teas, authors’ events, trips to New York City cultural events and other activities including the Summer Reading Club and other library programs.

Artists must register for the painting event by April 17th by visiting the library’s website, www.nutleypubliclibrary.org or submitting an Artist Registration form at the library. There is no entry fee for participating artists for both the painting and reception events.  However, artists are asked to share a 25% commission on sales to benefit the Friends of the NPL.

The Friends of the Nutley Public Library support the activities and purposes of the Nutley Free Public Library in enhancing the artistic, cultural, humanitarian, intellectual and literary aspects of community life.
