CEDAR GROVE, NJ - For 45 years, Gallery Haircutters was a staple in Caldwell, but when circumstances changed they went looking for a new home and found one in Cedar Grove.  A true family business, Gallery Haircutters relocated to 400 Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove in December and celebrated that move with a Grand “Re-Opening” on Saturday.

Vincent “Vinnie” Nicosia opened Gallery Haircutters 45 years ago in Caldwell. Treating his customers like family, he soon established a loyal clientele and successful business with the help of his wife June.  Sadly, Vinnie passed away in October of 2012, but he was doing what he loved, right up until the day he died, according to June.

“He just loved the business and his customers,” June said.  “Hairdressing wasn’t even a job to him.”

His daughter Debbie Nicosia Schwiederek agreed, noting that her father not only inspired loyalty in his clients but also in his operators.

“What we have here is a lot more than a hair salon.  We have a big family,” Debbie said. “Most of our operators have been with us for 30 plus years.  We’ve all grown together. We’re involved in each other’s lives outside of work. We take care of each other.”

With the loss of Vinnie, his family had a decision to make about the business -- walk away or carry on.  For June and Debbie, who has been a hairdresser with the Gallery for 32 years, the decision was a difficult one but they decided to keep the business going.  Then late last year circumstances arose that made moving the business a necessity and Debbie and June were faced with another hard choice.

"The decision was scary, but we made that move and couldn’t be happier with our new location," Debbie said.  "This business meant a lot to my dad, and it means so much to us to carry it on."

The tradition of Gallery Haircutters being a family business continues with Debbie’s husband Chuck helping her manage the salon and her 16-year-old son Michael working the desk and helping out wherever he can, and an amazing and talented staff, who make the Gallery what it is today.

The Grand “Re-Opening” was a way to celebrate their new home with their loyal customers and what better day to do it than Vincent’s birthday, May 19.

"On behalf of the town council, we are thrilled to welcome Gallery Haircutters to Cedar Grove," said Councilwoman Kerry Peterson.  " We wish them every success and know they will be a great addition to our growing downtown district."

"We feel very blessed to be here in Cedar Grove, and want to thank our clients for making this move with us. We look forward to continuing Vinnie’s legacy and welcome the Cedar Grove community to visit us," Debbie added.

Gallery Haircutters is located at 400 Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove. For more information visit or call 973-226-4800.
