VERONA, NJ - Desiree Meyer recorded 17 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist to lead the Verona Hillbillies girls basketball team to a 39-28 victory over Newark Central in their last regular season game at home on Thursday.
Newark Central had a two point lead after one quarter, but an 8-4 scoring run gave the Hillibillies a 17-15 advantage at the half. Both teams had a slow third quarter, with only 12 points scored between them, but Verona blasted into the fourth quarter outscoring Newark Central 15-8 to take the game,
Brianna Horton had 12 points, four steals and three assists in the win, while Cayla Okafor grabbed 11 rebounds and scored four points for the Hillbillies. Yakeerah Greene led for Newark Central with ten points.
The win improves Verona to 16-7 for the season. No. 2 Verona hosts No. 15 Parsippany on Tuesday at 4 p..m. in the first round of the NJSIAA North 2, Group 2 State Tournament.
