CALDWELL, NJ - The Verona Hillbillies took charge from the get go, defeating the Caldwell Chiefs 39-24 to win the West Essex Holiday Tournament at Caldwell University on Saturday.

Verona dominated the first quarter, outscoring the Chiefs 17-8 and in the end Caldwell could not overcome that first quarter deficit.   Desiree Meyer delivered 16 points in the win.  CC Courter tallied nine points and seven rebounds for the Hillbillies.  Cayla Okafor grabbed 12 rebounds and added three points in Verona's winning effort.

Brianna Horton was named Tournament MVP.  She delivered a total of 27 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals in Verona's route to the title.

The win improves Verona to 4-2 for the season.  They travel to Irvington on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

On May 4, 2018 at 2:58 p.m., Ptl. Raymond Cassella stopped a vehicle for not having an inspection decal and an obstructed windshield. A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the 28 year old male operator from Paterson for driving with a suspended license and having a suspended registration.
