Grand-reopening Event To Showcase Renovated Woodland Park Recreation Spaces

WOODLAND PARK, NJ - On Saturday, June 10, following the annual fishing contest, join borough officials for the grand re-opening event for the renovated and upgraded Frank Zaccaria and Rose Place parks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be music, food, rides, a reptile show (at 12:30 p.m.), a clown, face painting, fishing and more.

Take a tour of the parks, which have recently undergone the first in a multi-phased upgrade plan, and see the new features for adults and children of all ages. Renovations to the park have been made possible by the Woodland Park Open Space Trust Fund and are for everyone to enjoy.

"This is the largest investment in our municipal parks system that the borough has ever undergone," Mayor Keith Kazmark noted.

Work completed in the first phase of Zaccaria Park includes:

  • A floating dock at Henderson Pond
  • Sun shelters and picnic tables near pond and dock
  • Paved access drive with a turnaround
  • Addition of new parking lot, below the existing lot
  • Paved access drive
  • Constructed new basketball court at new location in the park
  • Addition of skateboard park
  • Additional playground equipment.
  • New playscape surface and borders
  • Waste and recycling containers at various locations.
  • New fence to separate park from residential properties.
  • New park entrance sign.

Work completed in Rose Place Park includes:

  • Replaced comfort station lighting and roof
  • Add swing-set with new playscape surface
  • New playscape surface
  • Repaired tennis court surface, installed new nets and windscreen and replaced lights
  • New benches
  • Reconstructed and paved circular walk path and paved connecting path to Zaccaria Park
  • New path light poles
  • New landscaping and signage at Rose Place, Highview Drive and Hobart Avenue park entrances
  • Installed drainage improvements along new paved path
  • Waste and recycling containers at various locations
  • Replaced concrete unit pavers between parking lot and comfort station

Phase two would be the installation of a new, larger synthetic turf soccer field with lighting, for which $834,000 in funding was pending from the Passaic County Open Space Trust Fund.
Other ways the council hopes to obtain money for the new field, which is expected to cost between $700,000 and $800,000, is by applying for grant money through the National Soccer Association.

The third phase will be for making upgrades to the walking path at Zaccaria Park which connects to Rose Place Park.

Woodland Park currently collects approximately $160,000 per year in Open Space, Recreation & Historic Preservation funding. This measure was voted upon and approved by the voters in November of 2004. It has been used for capital improvements, such as the new facilities installed at Memorial Field and multiple parks.

Earlier this year the council approved a resolution to submit a grant application to the state Department of Environmental Protection's Green Acres program for funding to help create a buffer zone between Rose Place and Zaccaria parks and home that abut the parkland. New trees and plantings would be installed in the park near the tennis courts, playground and basketball court.
