WEST ORANGE, NJ - Five different skaters found the back of the net for the Verona/Glen Ridge Hillbillies, to help the team defeat the Johnson Crusaders 5-2 at Codey Arena on Sunday.
Johnson struck first when Matt Alongi took advantage of a power play with just over six minutes left in the first period. However, Verona/GR scored back to back goals to close the period to give the Hillbillies the lead. The first goal came from Anton Marino with help from Sean DiCandia and Colin Gilmore on a power play with 2:40 left in the period. Less than a minute later, Jake Kuhn scored for Verona assisted by Chandler Otterbein and Harrison Keating. However, Johnson's Tyler Mekovetz tied the game up just 20 seconds later on an assist from Nick Galati.
Jarrod Keating took the lead back for Verona/GR midway through the second period to give Verona/GR a 3-2 advantage going into the third where back to back goals sealed the deal for the Hillbillies. First Noah Martinez scored, assisted by Armaan Rigby and Jarrod Keating, at the 10:49 mark. Rigby followed that up with another goal with 10:43 left in regulation play.
Colin Gilmore had 15 saves in goal for Verona/GR,while Karol Wieczorek had 43 saves for Johnson.
The win is the fifth in a row for Verona/Glen Ridge who improves to 8-2-4 for the season. They host Montville on Monday at Codey Arena at 6:15 p.m.
