BLOOMFIELD, NJ - Lynne's Nissan donated a vehicle to the Bloomfield Fire Department for rescue training. The Nissan Murano was cut up to training firefighters for several possible rescue situations.

Dan LePage of Lynne's Nissan explained that the vehicle that was suffered damage while in a customer's possession that could not be repaired. Nissan's policy for such vehicles is to return them to corporate for crushing.LePage explained that local dealers have the option of donating them to police and fire departments for training and education programs.

The vehicle was taking to Bloomfield Fire Station No. 3 on East Passaic Avenue where the department has a training facility. In 2016, TAPinto Bloomfield captured firefighters doing roof training at the location. Photo of the Day: Every Day is Training Day for the Bloomfield Fire Department

For automobile rescue operations, firefighters must be prepared for a wide range of situations. In addition to the expected dangers related to gasoline, airbags and electrical components of hybrid and electric cars present additional dangers to first responders.

In this case, the Nissan Murano has multiple air bags throughout the vehicle. In the event of a front end collision, the side impact airbags may not deploy, but doors may be jammed or locked, When using the jaws of life to remove doors, first responders need to move cautiously as cutting into the airbag system may cause it to deploy hurling the equipment at the firefighter.

Rescue operation involving an engine fire require additional skills. A fire in the engine compartment would make it impossible to open the hood latch the usual way, so firefighters need to cut through the hood to reach the locking mechanism and extinguish the fire. Directing a fire hose from underneath the vehicle could send high pressure water into the passenger compartment hampering the rescue operation of trapped passengers.

Auto glass breaks up into small pieces. Prior to government regulations requiring safety glass in all automobiles sold in the United States, window glass was used posing an extreme hazard to passengers in even the slightest impact. This glass also keep first responders safe when they need to break windows and windshields to rescue occupants.

As a part of the training, the Bloomfield Fire Department cut through all of the door pillars on the vehicle. Each pillar has unique characteristics and challenges. The 'a pillars" alongside the windshield pose are closest to the engine, electronics and the most powerful air bags of the vehicle. The pillars behind the driver's seat often contain airbags, and the rearmost pillars are usually among the thickest on the vehicle.

After the doors were cut away, roof removed, and hood detached, the Bloomfield Fire Department returned the vehicle to Lynne's Nissan on Bloomfield Avenue. Lynne's will ship the car back to corporate where it will be crushed and the metal will be recycled.

Lynne's Nissan is a part of the Lynne's group of dealerships in New Jersey. Lynne's started in Bloomfield in 1953 and been dedicated to the community and keeping residents safe. In November Lynne's Subaru hosted an adoption day for the Bloomfield Animal Shelter.

Lynne's Nissan is located at 318 Bloomfield Avenue.
