The event is free with the hardcover book purchase at this link: https://app.etapestry.com/onlineforms/MontclairPublicLibrary/ODonnell.html

O’Donnell hosts “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” on MSNBC relying on his back-ground in politics, entertainment and news, to provide the last word on the biggest issues and most compelling stories of the day. Before becoming a political analyst, he was an Emmy Award-winning executive producer and writer for the NBC series “The West Wing” and creator and executive producer of the NBC
series, “Mister Sterling.” Mr. O'Donnell also served as Senior Advisor to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

A writer prior to entering politics and government, O'Donnell published the book Deadly Force
(1983), and now has launched a new book about a pivotal election. Playing with Fire: The 1968 Election
and the Transformation of American Politics

“An excellent account of the 1968 presidential race, a political season of spoilers, outsiders, and broken machines eerily like our own time . . . [A] sharp, nuanced account . . . A careful, circumstantial study that compares favorably to Theodore H. White’s presidents series and that politics junkies will find irresistible.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred)

O’Donnell will be in conversation with award-winning news producer and Montclair resident Tom
Johnson. Mr. Johnson’s most recent work includes Showtime’s weekly documentary series, The Circus:

Inside the Biggest Story on Earth. Previously, he was Executive Editor of Bloomberg Politics and Exec-
utive Producer of the nightly politics program, With All Due Respect. Prior to that he spent two decades at ABC News.

O’Donnell will sign his book at the end of the event. The hardcover copy of Playing with Fire
is included in the admission ticket and coordinated by our partner Watchung Booksellers.
The Open Book/Open Mind series has been proudly supported by grants from The Montclair
Foundation, and Investors Foundation.

Our supporters are helping to keep “the Open Door” open to the robust panel of speakers and their exchange of ideas. However, contributions from local residents and businesses are welcome to keep the series thriving and growing. The speakers have generously donated their time and passion for the discussions but the events are time-intensive for staff and not inexpensive to organize, stage and film. Please consider donating to the Foundation at www.montclairplf.org
