WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Wood-Ridge's run towards a Group 1 title came to end on Saturday, as the third-seeded Blue Devils dropped their quarterfinal match to Verona, 2-0, in Wood-Ridge Tuesday afternoon. The Blue Devils were just a key point away in both games of the match,
Wood-Ridge dropped the first game 28-26, after having the game tied at 26-26. The second game was the same close battle, as Verona won the final two points, breaking a 24-24 tie for the victory.
"Obviously we were disappointed because nobody likes to lose but having said that the girls left it all on the court," said Wood-Ridge head coach Andrea Marino. "We never gave up and our scores were indicative of a highly well played match. I couldn't be any prouder of this team. Everyone counted us out from the beginning, and we never let down. There is so much to be grateful and proud of this season."
The Blue Devils finished the season as the NJIC Meadowlands Division champions going a perfect 18-0 in the regular season, and a 26-7 record overall.
Verona improves to 21-8 with the win. They travel to Kinnelon on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the NJSIAA Group 1 Semi-finals
