Panther Athlete of the Week: Jaime Dente

CEDAR GROVE, NJ  - She’s just a freshman, but she’s making a big impact on the soccer field for the Panthers.  Jaime Dente recorded six goals and two assists last week helping the Panthers beat Bloomfield Tech and Lacordaire Academy and earning her TAPinto Verona/Cedar Grove’s Panther Athlete of the Week honors.

“It’s a real honor to be recognized,” Dente said on her selection.  “It’s been amazing to have the chance to play for Cedar Grove High School and to be part of this team. ”

Dente leads the team in scoring and assists with 12 goals and five assists so far.  According to her coach Michael Moussab, her skills have helped bring the Panthers back to .500.  Following the two wins last week they are at 5-5-1 for the season.

Dente credited Moussab for his team leadership and said his coaching has been a highlight of the season for her.  “I love having ‘Moose’ as a coach.  He really pushes us, but in a good way,” she added.  “He’s strict, but we still have fun.  He’s been a great coach and role model.“

“The season has been good so far.  It’s been so much fun getting to know everybody and learning the best way we can play together,” she said.  “We definitely need to keep working on our communication and touches on the ball, but everybody works hard at practice.”

As she works this season, Dente is focused on next season with the hope that Cedar Grove can move up a division.  It currently plays in the Colonial Division.

“We want to end the season strong and we’d like to move up a division next year for sure,” she said.  “For myself I just want to keep working hard, keep learning and getting better.”

Hopefully her hard work will pay off as No. 18 Cedar Grove takes on No. 7 Montclair Kimberly Academy in the first round of the Essex County Tournament on Saturday.  For now, Dente is happy to be representing CGHS on the varsity soccer field.

It’s been incredible to play varsity.  It’s nice to see all of the work I’ve put in all of these years playing soccer come together,” she stated.  “It’s a great feeling.”
