Florham Park, NJ - Construction on NJ Transit's tracks into New York Penn Station will continue through Labor Day, AAA is encouraging motorists to plan ahead for the summer. AAA offers these tips to help with what they say "could be an epic commute throughout the summer"

AAA Tips for Commuters:

  • Stay up to date with NJ Transit happenings at njtransit.com
  • Find out about opportunities for cross-honoring on other carriers
  • Look for alternative routes to work, avoiding major highways
  • Consult co-workers for carpool options
  • Speak with employers about options for working remotely
• Consult local transportation management associations about ride-sharing options
  • Plan to leave significantly earlier than normal to reach your destination
  • Be sure to have a full tank of fuel before heading out in the event there are significant delays
  • If you do not have to be on the roads during peak commuting hours, it is best to stay home

AAA advises New Jersey Transit riders to review their individual transit lines to determine if they need to take a new route or see what carriers are cross-honoring tickets.

“In a recent survey by the AAA Clubs of New Jersey, motorists were asked to rate their satisfaction with their regular commutes, and 45 percent said their commute has gotten worse,” said Cathleen Lewis, Director of Public Affairs and Government Relations for AAA Northeast.

In a state as congested as New Jersey, where our roadways cannot take on additional capacity, public transit is a critical part of our transportation system. That is why AAA continues to advocate for proper funding mechanisms to ensure that residents have a viable, affordable, accessible alternative to the roadways.

“New Jersey commuters deserve safe and reliable transportation that is not detrimental to their quality of life,” Lewis added. “To put it simply, if commuters cannot rely on public transportation options they will move to the roadways and our infrastructure cannot handle the additional volume for a prolonged period.”

AAA Northeast in New Jersey provides automotive, travel, insurance, financial and educational services to its nearly 400,000 members in Essex, Morris and Union Counties.
