CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Cedar Grove police investigated a report of an unknown man seen videotaping a youth soccer practice at Community Park Monday night.
According to Police Chief Joe Cirasa, officers responded to the park at around 5:45 p.m. when a parent approached the man because he did not appear to have any connection to the practice or the children he was videotaping. When confronted, the man abruptly left the park.
Officers were able to locate him nearby and questioned him as to his activities. The video was viewed by police and according to reports was "on its face, was not nefarious" consisting of distant shots and accompanied by sports like commentary.
As it is unusual to videotape a practice without consent or an association to the event or participants, police did conduct a background check which was negative. The video was deleted, the subject was cautioned, and Cedar Grove police say the matter will be followed up, to the fullest extent possible.
"I am grateful that the parent was alert and called police," Cirasa said. "Do use caution when involved in matters such as this. Suspicious persons or activity should be reported immediately via 911. Do not delay."
