Third Annual Cedar Grove Waves Installation Will Once Again Honor 9/11 Victims and Educate Students

CEDAR GROVE,NJ - The lawn of Cedar Grove High School will once again be adorned with 2,977 flags in memory of the victims of the 9/11 attacks.   This will be the third annual Cedar Grove Waves art installation and organizer and Board of Education member David Schoner continues to enlarge the scope of the memorial to help educate Cedar Grove students about the events of that day.

Some of the new additions this year include a formal ceremony and displays at Memorial Middle School, North End School and South End School.  Schoner said his goal is to continue to have the memorial evolve so that Cedar Grove students can learn about the events of that day and the impact they had on our world.

"I keep thinking about how do we involve the kids," Schoner said.  "Even at the lower schools, though it obviously needs to be age appropriate. That's why the displays in the other buildings are being added this year."

Schoner will begin the  setting up process on September 5, with the goal of having the students put the flags in the ground on Sept. 7 and 8.   Schoner will tweak the installation over the weekend so it will be ready for the formal service on Sept. 11.
In Cedar Grove Waves first installation in 2015, CGHS students helped place the flags, however last year school did not begin until Sept. 12 due to construciton so Schoner was assisted by local Boy Scouts, the CGHS All School Council and several student volunteers.  This year, Schoner is happy to report that CGHS will once again be incorporating the installation into the school day and curriculum.  All students will not only assist with placing the flags, but also attend a seminar detailing the events of Sept. 11.
The formal ceremony, which is new this year, will be held on the morning of Sept. 11.  Bagpiper Dick Boesch will play "Amazing Grace" to open the ceremony and trumpet player Joe Colasurdo will play "Taps" to close it.  In addition, 18 students will read a moment of time giving a timeline of the series of events that occurred that day.
