HOBOKEN, NJ – An NJ Transit train was unable to stop at the Hoboken Terminal, crashing into the platform during the morning commute. One person is dead, more than 100 people are injured and there was structural damage to the station, according to various media outlets.

The Pascack Valley Line train was entering the Hoboken station at 8:45 a.m. when the accident occurred, according to WCBS-TV. It crashed through a wall and into a reception area.

Train #1614 had left Spring Valley, N.Y., at 7:23 a.m. and was running late for its 8:38 a.m. arrival in Hoboken, WABC-TV reported.

“The train simply did not stop,” one witness said. “Passengers were thrown off their feet,” said another.

Most of the serious injuries involved those in the train’s first car or people struck by falling debris, television media reported.

As of 9:55 a.m., there was a report of four people from the accident being treated at Hoboken University Medical Center.

There was a massive emergency services response, with units from all over Hudson County at the scene.

Social media photographs showed extensive damage to the station and the train up against its waiting room wall.

NJ Transit and PATH train services were completely suspended going into and out of the Hoboken Terminal.
