TAPintoTravels - As New Yorkers, we depend on one forgotten resource and that is steel. It holds up our buildings, decorates our homes, and keeps the prisoners on Rikers Island.
As part of our series on the North Coast (or North Shore for our New Jersey readers), we are highlighting great stop points to rest the feet and get the kids out of the car. In this case, we are pointing out a great Steel Bar in Girard, Ohio.
We forget that steel is integral to our lives and the steel used in New York City was manufactured almost exclusively in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and Youngstown, Ohio.
The Alumni Inn is one of the best examples of a great Steel Bar in the heart of steel production country.
It is the oldest bar in Girard and hosted thousands of steel workers over its several decades in operations. It is a place that time almost forgot. It has all its working class charm, timeless decor, and great food. The prices cannot be beat. One of our team asked to pay the bill. When they returned the change, she replied, "No. For everyone." The bartender replied, "That is for everyone."
Try the hot sausage sandwich. It's on the front of the building for a reason. Plus, the recipe has not changed in 80 years. You know it has got to be good.
Remember, they only accept cash though.
