Verona High School Names New Head Football Coach


VERONA, NJ - The Verona Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Coach Tony Sorrentino as Verona High School Head Football Coach. Coach Sorrentino comes to Verona with a passion and commitment to leadership, character, academics, and athletic excellence. Throughout the interview process, Coach Sorrentino impressed several committees, comprised of VHS faculty and administration, as an innovative and forward thinking leader who possesses a caring, student centered approach focused on player improvement.

Coach Sorrentino possesses a genuine appreciation for the mentors who have helped shape him into the person and coach he is today. His focus will be to positively impact our students. He believes in challenging oneself, a commitment to continuous improvement, and competing in order to achieve an individual’s highest potential. Over the past several weeks, he has conveyed a supportive coaching philosophy where constructive feedback is provided and confidence is developed in student athletes. We believe that our football program is one where skill and strategy will be taught while concurrently creating a positive, character-building experience, in which striving to win will be equally as important as teaching life lessons.

Coach Sorrentino has over a decade of experience coaching in the NFL, NCAA, and high school football. His most prominent experience includes serving as the Assistant Wide Receivers Coach and Offensive Quality Control Coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2013 to 2016. Most recently, Coach Sorrentino was an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee. He has experience as a quarterbacks coach, offensive quality control coach, and passing game coordinator at the University of Miami, University of Minnesota, and The College of New Jersey. Coach Sorrentino began his professional experience as an intern with the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans.

Luke Butkus, former Assistant Offensive Line Coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars and current Offensive Line Coach at the University of Illinois, praised Sorrentino for his strong character, detail oriented work ethic, and knowledge of football. “Tony is a developmental coach, both in the pros and in college ball. He is a great communicator and his strength is in teaching and developing players to become their best self. I’m looking forward to visiting Verona in the future and watching your players.”

Coach Sorrentino has dedicated himself for the past thirteen years as a professional and collegiate coach, physical education teacher, and strength and conditioning coach. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), where he is qualified to train athletes in sport-specific strength training and conditioning programs. In addition to working at the professional and college level, Coach Sorrentino has coached middle and high school football, basketball, and lacrosse. Coach Sorrentino earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Health & Physical Education and Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from the The College of New Jersey. He currently resides in Parsippany, NJ with his wife, Kara, and son, Anthony Jr.

Coach Sorrentino is excited to join the Verona Public Schools and is looking forward to working closely with the Verona community. He will also serve as the Junior Varsity Boy’s Lacrosse Coach this spring and as a long term leave replacement teacher at Verona High School. Coach Sorrentino will be meeting with student athletes, coaches, and parents in the coming weeks. Please join us in welcoming Coach Sorrentino as the Verona High School Head Football Coach.
