Verona Library Announces Summer Events

VERONA, NJ - Readers of all ages will explore all things musical this summer as the Verona Public Library presents “Libraries Rock” during its annual summer reading program. The 2018 Summer Reading Program is open to all Verona residents, from pre-readers through adult, with activities that will include a reading club, story times, crafts, art projects, coding, music, special weekly performances, and more.

Registration for “Libraries Rock” opened Wednesday, June 2 -- sign up for the club anytime in the Children’s room or online at www.veronalibrary.org.

Then, join the Library for fun, family-friendly programs on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m.:
June 27: Zoo Jersey will bring a huge variety of animals, from birds and reptiles to mammals, invertebrates and amphibians. 
July 11:  Dinosaur Dig will present a fun-filled show covering the formation of fossils, herbivores vs. carnivores, basics of geology (rocks and minerals).  The team will discuss their work as field paleontologists and background in geology. There will be an interactive fossil talk to ready the Junior Paleontologists to go on their dig.
July 18: Lizard Guys return with live animal presentations featuring lizards, snakes, turtles, frogs and bugs.
July 25: The Opera Theatre of Montclair will introduce children to opera with a special a special performance of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.
August 1: Art Kids Academy will provide interactive creative art programming for kids.
August 8:  Summer Reading Grand Finale featuring Polka Dot!

Libraries Rock Reading Club:
Pre-Readers through elementary school, your goal is to read for at least two hours each week. After finishing your two hours of reading for the week, return to the Library for a prize (one prize per week). Completing the program entitles you to come to the Grand Finale Party featuring Polka Dot on August 8 at 1:30 p.m. in the Verona Community Center Ballroom.

For Middle School through Teen Readers:
1. READ IT:  Fiction or nonfiction, graphic novels, comic books, audio books, eBooks – read whatever YOU want to read this summer!
2. RATE IT:  Fill out a book review form – rate your book, then write a short review.  Did you love it?  Hate it? 
3. WIN IT: We are doing a point system.  For every 20 pages read, you will receive 1 point.  You get 1 point for every review you submit. Cash in 5 points once a week for a prize (one prize per week). Prizes include fidget spinners, Chipotle gift cards, tote bags, VR viewers and more!

If you earn 25 points by August 8, you will score an invitation to our Teen Exclusive Summer Reading Wrap-Up Party on August 9 at 2 p.m. There will be lots of ice cream, games, and prize raffles.

For Adults:
July 10, 7:00 p.m.: Woodstock Music & Art Fair, presented by Jim Shelley, docent at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Hear about the historic concert from someone who was there. Slideshow and lecture will be held in the Ballroom of the Verona Community Center.
Thursdays, 10:00 a.m.: Meditation and Relaxation. Meet in the Ballroom of the Verona Community Center. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat/blanket.
Tuesdays, 11:00 a.m. Knit for a Cause (or Crochet, Sew or Donate!). Your hand-crafted items will be donated to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where poverty levels are staggering. All skill levels are welcome. Materials will be provided, but donations of yarn are appreciated! Join us for this worthy cause.

Verona residents 18 and up are invited to play Library Bingo, the game that challenges you to read outside of your comfort zone! Read new authors, try an ebook, research genealogy and more. Each row of challenges that you complete will earn a ticket to win a prize. Have fun.
