VERONA, NJ - Verona was named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation for the 30th consecutive year.

Members of Verona's Shade Tree Commission presented the Town Council with signs and flags it received in recognition at the Town Council meeting Monday. Tree City USA status is awarded to communities that demonstrate a commitment to caring for and managing their public trees. To achieve this, communities must meet four core standards: maintain a tree board or department, passing a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

The Shade Tree Commission is comprised of resident volunteers designated by the mayor.  Current members are Bob Dickison (Chairman), Bob Prout, Gloria Starita, Robert Boeck and Sandra Borland. Councilman Kevin Ryan, acting liaison to the commission, praised its efforts saying Verona was lucky to have such dedicated volunteers. National Arbor Day will be celebrated in Verona on Friday, April 24.
