VERONA, NJ - Verona police took a report of larceny from a Hillcrest Terrace resident on Aug. 15 after the victim was defrauded during a Craigslist transaction.
According to the report, the resident advertised an item on Craigslist for $2,600 and received a check for the item and deposited it at his bank. At the time he did not notice the check was for more than the agreed upon amount.
The buyer than contacted him and stated he overpaid and requested the resident return the overpayment to him via a “Walmart 2 Walmart” transfer. Once the resient completed the Walmart transfer, the buyer advised the resident that he no longer needed the item.
The resident then checked his bank account and discovered that the check he deposited from the purchase was declined. The resident then found out that the funds were removed from his account. When he contacted the bank the resident was advised that the bank would not reimburse the lost funds.
