SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Jenika Ying, a senior at Verona High School, was honored on Sunday at the “National Girls and Women In Sports Day” at Seton Hall University.
Ying, who runs cross-country and winter track for VHS and plays lacrosse, was nominated for the award by her coaches and the VHS administration. Only one girl from each school is selected each year. The award is given by the National Girls and Women in Sports program, which recognizes outstanding high school and college female athletes who show athletic excellence, a commitment to community service, and academic success.
Ying has already earned a spot in the top ten best-ever runners in VHS cross-country history and is having a stellar winter track season, all while also achieving a 4.6 GPA.
The National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) began in 1987 as a special day to recognize women’s sports. The day united premiere organizations and elite female athletes to bring national attention to the promise of girls and women in sports. NGWSD has since evolved into an event to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.
