BLOOMFIELD, NJ - Bloomfield Mayor Michael Venezia and Public Safety Director Samuel DeMaio assure residents that there is no reason to believe further violence will occur in the area following the shooting death on Ampere Parkway this evening. DeMaio confirmed that this was a targeted shooting.

At approximately 7 p.m. Saturday, the first reports came over the wires about an individual being shot in the neck by someone wearing a hooded sweatshirt. The victim, Juan P Santos-Martinez, 55 of East Orange, was shot while in a vehicle. The victim's identity was confirmed by Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino.

Neighbors in the area reported that they heard "5 or 6 shots" fired. Another neighbor reported that "the guy was performing CPR on him." The "guy" was confirmed by DeMaio to be a Bloomfield Police Officer who arrived at the scene shortly after the shots were fired. Neighbors reported that there was a fast response with multiple BPD vehicles reporting to the scene. The victim was pronounced dead at 7:12 p.m. according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennely, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

After Bloomfield Police secured the area, the Essex County Prosecutors Office Homicide Task Force arrived on the scene. They are working jointly on the investigation..

Mayor Venezia said that " both the victim and the assailant were residents of East Orange and were traveling through Bloomfield when the incident occurred.  Our thoughts are with the victim and his family at this time. . Residents, please be advised this was not a random attack and did not involve Bloomfield residents. Sadly, our town has been a victim of this incident as well".

DeMaio added  "At this point there is nothing that would lead us to believe that there is a potential for further violence in the area. Again this appears that this victim was targeted." He stressed that this was not a random act of violence.

DeMaio and Venezia were in real time communication as the events unfolded.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Prosecutor's Tip Line at (877) 847-7432.
