SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Essex County Moms Demand Action are hosting a "Wear Orange" rally for gun violence awareness on Sunday, June 3, in recognition of national Gun Violence Awareness Day. The event will feature music, speakers and information about how to get involved in the gun violence prevention movement.

According to organizers, the rally will be held at 4 p.m. in the South Orange Gazebo (17 Sloan St.) and will include local leaders, concerned citizens, and students, who will work together "to bring the city and suburbs together in unity to demand a future free from gun violence."

Local leaders attending include Maplewood Mayor Victor DeLuca. South Orange Village President Sheena Collum and Rabbi Daniel Cohen, who is representing the SOMA Interfaith Clergy.

"Sheena and Vic have been incredibly supportive. This is our third year having a Wear Orange rally in SOMA and they have been supportive all along. They are both members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. After Parkland they helped us raise about $30,000 for Everytown for Gun Safety," shared Rachel Eskin Fisher, a volunteer with Moms Demand Action, via email.

Fisher also explained that the rally on Sunday is an opportunity to work towards gun reform with the larger Essex County community. "This rally is important because it demonstrates the growing coalition against gun violence and for gun reform -- the city and the suburbs coming together to say #Enough. SOMA is a perfect location because we are a suburb right next to Newark, so we are the right location to bring the city and suburbs together on an issue that affects us all," shared Fisher.

Attendees are invited to wear orange to show their support at the rally. Orange became a symbolic color in the gun violence prevention movement because, shared organizers, "it’s the color that hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others from gunfire. So Hadiya Pendleton’s friends decided to wear orange in her honor when she was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 15."
