CEDAR GROVE/VERONA, NJ - Gov. Phil Murphy announced on Wednesday that New Jersey state parks will reopen for passive recreation and golf courses and county parks can reopen on Saturday. Municipal parks remain at the discretion of the respective townships.
The governor's order will take effect at sunrise on Saturday and social distancing rules must still be followed. “We cannot have everyone rushing out to a park or golf course,” Murphy said in his daily press briefing. “Social distancing will be strictly enforced.”
Following Murphy's announcement, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. announced via Twitter that Essex County parks will reopen for passive recreation and golf courses will offer modified play beginning Saturday. DiVincenzo also noted that facial coverings and social distancing will be required.
Passive recreation includes running, hiking, biking, kayaking, boating, horseback riding, fishing.
- Parking lot capacity will be capped at 50%
- CLOSED: Playgrounds, Pavilions, Visitor Centers, Restrooms
- PROHIBITED: Picnics, organized activities, organized/team sports
County parks, trails, and recreational areas in Cedar Grove and Verona include:
- Cedar Grove Park
- Verona Park
- Kip's Castle Park
- Hilltop Reservation
- Mills Reservation
- West Essex Trail
In addition, Cedar Grove announced that Community Park will reopen for passive recreation only beginning Friday, which includes bike riding, jogging, walking and hiking. Playgrounds and restrooms will remain closed and team sports, organized activities, picnics and social gatherings are prohibited. A social distance of 6 feet should be maintained while participating in the above activities and Facial Covering/Masks are strongly recommended. Parking at Community Park should be staggered utilizing every other spot.
Morgan’s Farm will also be reopened on a limited basis for passive recreation only. Farmers Market activities will be allowed with restrictions. Only two people will be allowed to operate the stand practicing social distancing and wearing facial covering/masks. Customers will remain in their vehicles and transactions will take place through the window of the vehicle. No Cash Transactions Credit or Debit Cards only. All Personal Protective Equipment must be disposed of properly to keep our environment clean.
All Ball fields at Community Park will remain CLOSED to any activity. Panther Park, George Street Park, Little Falls Road Tennis/ Basketball Courts and Blasi Field will remain closed till further notice.
