Winter Track: Verona Athletes Advance to State Group Championships

TOMS RIVER, NJ - A strong showing at the winter track sectionals in Toms River on Saturday has given several Verona High School athletes a chance to compete in the state Group Championships next weekend.  

Kate Ashley won the state sectional 800m race in exciting fashion -- she finished with a time of 2:23.74, while Samantha Green of Park Ridge took second with a time of 2:23.93. 

Ashley also placed in the 400m race earlier in the meet with a time of 1:02.16 -- the fourth place finish ensures her spot at the group championships in that event as well.  Ashley also anchored the 4x400 elay team of Olivia Fiore, Brianna Rigney and Alex DeVivo, which took fifth place with a time of 4:22.26 allowing them to advance to the championships as well

The boys track team also performed well.  Owen Fogarty took fourth place in pole vault allowing him to move on and the 4×400 relay team of Vincent Hogan, David Navarro, Bryan McKeen and Evan Huaman who took sixth place with a time of 3:50.68.

The State Group Championships will be held on Feb. 17, at the John Bennett Indoor Sports Center in Toms River, beginning at 9 a.m.
