CEDAR GROVE, NJ- The Cedar Grove Sport Management Class challenges themselves to produce the 2nd Annual Syracuse Orange Invitational Volleyball Tournament held on March 22 at 7pm.

This class is run by Syracuse University Project Advance, where the students are able to earn three college credits. The class applies general  business concepts to the sport industry.

To start the year the students study the basics such as, the origin of sport management, marketing, finance, and law. It is a very hands on class, where they have done multiple projects that relate to current sport issues. Student, Dom Bryant said, “It is a great way for high school students to get a better perspective on the business side of sports, with topics such as event planning, marketing, sponsorships, and management.”

One of the major requirements that the students must fulfill is the planning and executing of an event within the school.  The size and scope of the event is completely up to the students.  “As the inaugural Sport Management class,  last year’s group decided they would host a school wide volleyball tournament,” states Sport Management teacher Joe Cardinale.  “Our goal was to raise money in an effort to install a new sound system in the gym.  The event was a success, both educationally and functionally.”

Last year, Cardinale had forty students and two classes to run the tournament.  This year there is only one class of twenty students, so the challenge for Mr. Cardinale and his Sport Management students has been amplified.  Cardinale also added, “Through expanding benchmarks for ticket sales and sponsorships, the students decided that they wanted to ramp up our size of the event, and they’ve certainly met their expectations so far.”

While the event management project is a very large part of the Sport Management class, there are other focuses throughout the year as well.  The class demands that students hone their presentation and public speaking skills, submit various research projects, as well as interact with individuals by conducting interviews with employees from various sports organizations.

According to Cedar Grove Senior Ava Fernandez, “The sport management class has really taught me a lot not only about business and how it pertains to sports, but also about myself.  I’ve developed skills and experiences that I’ll use and take with me as I go away to college and into my career.”

The Orange Invitational is March 22 at 7 p.m. at the Cedar Grove High School gym located at 90 Rugby Road, Cedar Grove.  Tickets are $5 for students and $7 per adults, and can be purchased by emailing cardinale.joseph@cgschools.org.  All proceeds will be donated to the Progeria Research Foundation on behalf of Team Zoey.  For more information, please contact Joe Cardinale or visit the Facebook Event Page.
