The Caldwell Railway

Join the Cedar Grove Historical Society on Wednesday, May 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cedar Grove Public Library to hear Phil Jaeger’s presentation entitled “The Caldwell Railway.” Jaeger will discuss the railway from its beginning in 1891 through its demise in 1979.  His PowerPoint program contains old pictures of the railway and the remains that can still be seen today.  The original railway operated between Caldwell and Caldwell Junction (today’s Great Notch) but was soon extended to Essex Fells as well as becoming the Caldwell Branch of the Erie Railroad.  Learn what part the railway played in the building of both Overbrook and the Newark Reservoir, and what were the reasons for its eventual demise.  There will be a short business meeting before the program.
