Gretchen L. Godwin, 49, of Cedar Grove, NJ, died July 21, 2019. She was born in Jersey City, NJ, the eldest daughter of Drs. Alan and Rene Godwin. She was educated at The Montclair Kimberley Academy, earned a Bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College and a Masters degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from New York University.
In 1989 she met Nathan Chickering, of Brookline, MA, at Skidmore College, and they wed in 2002.
Gretchen was employed by the YMCA of Montclair where she was the 2018 recipient of the YMCA Red Triangle award for exceptional staff. She was previously employed at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Merrill Lynch. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, friend and member of her community. She lived with grace and shined her light on all who knew her. She was guided by the same principles instilled in her through her parents: kindness, hard work and generosity.
Gretchen was dedicated to the YMCA’s mission of making sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. Through her years of work there Gretchen helped many members of the Montclair and surrounding communities.
She leaves her husband Nathan, daughter Ava and son Jarrett. She also leaves her mother Dr. Rene Godwin of Cliffside Park, NJ; sister Chaz Godwin Ross (and Mitchell Ross) New York, NY; sister Serena Godwin (and David Meyrowitz) of Montclair, NJ, brother Dr. Loyd Godwin (and Sara Godwin) of Weston, CT; nieces Samantha, Cate and Madeline Godwin, Stella Ross and nephew Jed Meyrowitz. She was predeceased by her father, Dr. Alan Godwin.
Funeral services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. To celebrate her life we will be gathering together on Saturday, July 27, noon to 2 pm at the Montclair Art Museum, to honor her and share our memories and stories. Memorial gifts in Gretchen’s memory can be made to the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation or The Montclair Kimberley Academy.
