VERONA, NJ — At its last meeting, the Verona Township Council considered a request by Green Thumb Industries (GTI) New Jersey, LLC for a medical cannabis dispensary.
GTI New Jersey, which opened a dispensary in the city of Paterson less than two years ago, has asked the Verona Township Council to write a letter of support for a dispensary that would be located at 30 Pompton Ave., the former Chase Bank location.
GTI New Jersey, during a presentation to the council in May, reaffirmed a strictly medical use of the dispensary with no preemptive plans to open up recreationally while it is still illegal in New Jersey.
No official action was taken on the matter at the last council meeting on July 13, but action is expected to take place when the township council holds its next public meeting on Monday, July 27.
Verona Mayor Jack McEvoy reiterated at the July 13 meeting, "I will try to put forth a ban on the sale of recreational marijuana [to] prevent the sale of recreational marijuana at this location."
Recreational marijuana sales in New Jersey remain illegal, but recreational marijuana legalization will be on November ballot in New Jersey.
"If the residents do vote in favor of it, the state could go ahead and pass their law and say you can't ban it anywhere," McEvoy said. "And then all ordinances would be null and void."
