CEDAR GROVE, NJ - On Monday the state released a list of 425 nursing homes and health care facilities in New Jersey with coronavirus outbreaks. The list included five nursing homes located in Cedar Grove and revealed that 244 cases of COVID-19 stem from these five facilities with 48 deaths reported.
These numbers may be confusing to some residents, when viewing the latest coronavirus numbers released by the county for Cedar Grove which show 206 cases of COVID-19 within the township and 35 deaths reported.
Township Manager Tom Tucci explained the discrepancy at the virtual Staff Council meeting held on Monday, noting that long-term patients of these facilities are considered Cedar Grove residents so if they test positive for COVID-19 and/or pass away due to the virus they are included in the numbers for the township. Short-term patients at these facilities who may have been impacted by the virus would be attributed to the numbers for the township in which they reside. He further clarified that of the 206 cases reported in Cedar Grove, 53% are connected with the care facilities in town.
"I'm glad that Mr. Tucci clarified this because when you look at the numbers and it’s broken down by each individual nursing home that we have in this town we have COVID positives as 244 in those five nursing homes and deaths at 48 in those five nursing homes," said Councilman Joe Cicala during the staff meeting. "It’s not that we’re not being consistent it’s just the way the numbers are reported."
Here is a breakdown for each facility in Cedar Grove based on the information released by the state.
|Care Facility||Number of COVID-9 Cases||COVID-19 Deaths|
|Alaris Health at Cedar Grove||35||6|
|Arbor Glen Center||27||6|
|St. Joseph's Health Care and Rehab Center||65||7|
|The Canterbury at Cedar Grove||65||15|
The numbers reported by the state include coronavirus cases and deaths at each facility, as reported by the facilities themselves. Deaths include COVID-positive deaths, deaths in people with pending test results, and respiratory illness deaths for which COVID testing was not performed.
