CEDAR GROVE, NJ - According to the township's Situational Awareness Report, 65 percent of Cedar Grove's positive COVID-19 cases stem from nursing and care facilities within the township.
According to Wednesday's report from Essex County there are currently 348 cases of COVID-19 in Cedar Grove with 81 deaths reported, while there are 108 cases in Verona with 11 deaths reported. However, the total cases stemming from care facilities in Cedar Grove is 406 with 84 deaths reported. The Essex County Hospital is not included in these numbers, but according to the Situational Awareness Report, there are less than 20 cases stemming from the hospital with no deaths reported.
Township Manager Tom Tucci explained the discrepancy between the reported numbers during a council meeting in April noting that long-term patients of these facilities are considered Cedar Grove residents so if they test positive for COVID-19 and/or pass away due to the virus they are included in the numbers for the township. Short-term patients at these facilities who may have been impacted by the virus would be attributed to the numbers for the township in which they reside.
Here is a breakdown for each facility in Cedar Grove based on the information released by the state.
|Care Facility||Number of COVID-19 Cases||COVID-19 Deaths|
|Alaris Health at Cedar Grove||65||10|
|Arbor Glen Center||42||9|
|St. Joseph's Health Care and Rehab Center||107||25|
|The Canterbury at Cedar Grove||106||18|
