CEDAR GROVE, NJ – Cedar Grove police arrested an East Orange man for assaulting a police officer on Friday afternoon.
Police responded to a report of a suspicaions vehicle in the area of Eileen Drive at around 3:25 p.m. Friday. Officer Jason Rivers located the vehicle, which is occupied and improperly parked on Jennie Court. The officer questioned the two occupants of the vehicle and the driver said he was in the neighborhood because they like looking at the houses.
Upon further inspection, Officer Rivers questioned the validity of vehicle inspection decal and determined it was fraudulent after a check with NJ Motor Vehicles. As the conversation progressed, the driver, Khalil Cale, 20, became agitated and increasingly irrational.
Lt. John Kennedy arrived on scene to assist, but the officers could not calm Cale, who refused to return to his vehicle or follow all direction. He remained in the roadway and began to verbally threatening the officers, eventually beginning to slap at Lt. Kennedy's defensively raised arms.
When he was told he was under arrest, Cale ran from the officers. He was taken into custody a short distance away and arrested for resisting arrest, obstruction of the administration of law, and aggravated assault on a police officer. He was transported to headquarters without further incident and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office authorized disorderly person charges. Cale was released with a municipal court date. The vehicle passenger, a female, was released at the scene and vehicle was impounded. No injuries were reported.
