CEDAR GROVE, NJ – A Georgia woman was charged with attempted murder after she allegedly stabbed an elderly woman in Cedar Grove on Monday.
Cedar Grove police were called to a Sunrise Terrace address at around 4:30 a.m. Monday on a report of a woman bleeding. Upon arrival Officers Michael Passafiume and Justin Westra were met by the caller, the victim’s husband.
According to police reports, the officers found the 86-year-old victim on the second floor lying in bed stabbed numerous times and bleeding profusely. The officers worked to control the victim’s bleeding and secure the scene.
The suspect, Tanya Spears, 60, of Cumming, GA, was found in a first floor bedroom. Police said Spears, who was a house guest, allegedly stabbed the victim approximately 15 times.
The victim was transported to an area trauma center and remains in critical condition.
Spears was processed at Cedar Grove Police Headquarters and charged with Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder, Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for unlawful purpose. Spears was taken to the Essex County Jail to await a bail hearing.
The investigation is continuing with the Cedar Grove Detective Bureau executing a search warrant, and processing the crime scene. No motive for the attack has been discovered.
