CEDAR GROVE, NJ - With more than 90 service points and 100 digs for the season, senior Chloe Weinstein is a leader for the Cedar Grove Panthers girls volleyball team on and off the court. Weinstein is the Allstate Cedar Grove Athlete of the Week. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Shelby Mobley, Allstate Insurance Agent, 471 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove.
"Chloe is the vocal leader of our defense. She commands the court in the back row. She hustles for every single ball and if a ball is in her area a play is never over no matter how hard the hit is," said head coach Jessica Schomaker. "She is also a very consistent server for us. She works extremely hard to be the best that she can be."
With a record of 4-9 for the season, it has not been an easy start for the Panthers, but Weinstein feels the team is starting to come together and is headed in the right direction.
"I won't lie, the beginning was rough, but we recognized our flaws and we used practice to work on everything we were doing wrong," Weinstein said. "We aren't necessarily getting the wins that we want yet, but we are definitely getting better. We're playing together as a team rather than as individiuals. We're growing as a team."
While adjusting to each other, the Panthers were also adjusting to a new coaching style as it is Schomaker's first year at the helm. Weinstein said she appreciates Schomaker's opinion and insight in identifying where mistakes are being made and how they should go about correcting them.
"I think her coaching really works for us and is helping us get better," Weinstein said. "She points out where we are making mistakes and then we really work to correct things in practice.
In addition to working hard at practice, the team also used team bonding events to help build chemistry. While Weinstein feels they are still working on their communication, she feels the team's biggest strength is that everyone supports each other.
"Everyone is always there to pick someone up when they are down. When we had that first win, it was a great feeling -- to know that we were working hard and getting better," Weinstein said. "It was really a great feeling."
As the team heads into the second half of the season, the Panthers will once again take on some of the teams they lost to earlier in the season and Weinstein is hoping that Cedar Grove can turn things around and not lost to those teams again and end her senior season on a high note
As she finishes up her volleyball career at CGHS, Weinstein said she's sad to see it end.
"It's upsetting. I'm going to miss it. It's been a great four years," Weinstein noted.
