CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Though only a sophomore, Christa Fox is proving herself as a key contributor on the Cedar Grove High School girls tennis team. Moving from doubles to singles this season, Fox has delivered in almost all of her matches making her the Allstate Cedar Grove Athlete of the Week. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Shelby Mobley, Allstate Insurance Agent, 471 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove.
"From the first day of practice Christa has just worked hard to be the best player she can be. She's very coachable, has a great attitude and is always positive," said head coach Kirsten Mattesky. "When Christa was asked to move up to the 2nd singles position due to a missing player, she went out and won her match. She's had a great individual season, and we're lucky to have her for another two years."
Fox has been playing tennis since the fourth grade and even taught the sport over the summer. She said playing tennis just makes her feel good, and she enjoys the comradery of the team win or lose.
“I feel this has been a good season for me and the team. We’ve had a few losses, but I still think we’ve played really well and are making improvements,” Fox said. “I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better individually too. Last year I barely had any wins at doubles, but this year at 3rd singles I’ve won almost every time, so I feel I’ve made a lot of progress.”
With a 4-10 record, Cedar Grove has doubled the wins the team had last year, showing steady improvement and Fox has been a factor in that success and those wins. Fox said though she liked playing doubles, she’s enjoying her new role as a singles player and feels she’s most able to help the team there.
“I like both doubles and singles, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be singles as I’ve been most successful there,” Fox said. “I think as a team as a whole, we’ve really gotten so much better. Sometimes I think we need to give it our all a bit more, but we have great sportsmanship. If we lose, we don’t get mad or get down. We shake it off and move on to the next match, and we are all really supportive of each other.”
Team bonding has been a big part of the team’s improvement and probably Fox’s favorite part of the season overall. She noted the recent addition of the Panther’s Den, a building next to the courts that the team was given permission to use during the season.
“The Panther’s Den has been great this season. We cleaned and decorated it all together as a team and it’s just been really fun to have that space to hang out in together,” Fox said.
With just two matches left, Fox is hoping to have a strong finish.
“Friday we take on Mt. St. Dominic and I’m really looking forward to the challenge. I’m pretty excited to see how that turns out,” Fox said. “I hope we finish strong with our last two matches and then I just want to celebrate together as a team.
