CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Though only a sophomore, Lexi Scivetti has been a dominating force for the Cedar Grove girls basketball team this season. She’s the second leading rebounder with 122 and has also notched 138 points for the season so far. Scivetti is the Allstate Cedar Grove Athlete of the Week. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Shelby Mobley, Allstate Insurance Agent, 471 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove.
“Lexi has contributed to our team in so many ways. First, she works hard every day in practice, and she plays like she practices. She is our second leading rebounder and a consistent scorer, but it is her defensive versatility that has been her biggest contribution,” said Head Coach Bill Scanlon. “She has played both post players and guards, and has been equally effective. She plays the top in our 1-3-1, and with her length and her athletic instincts has been incredibly disruptive to the opposing team.”
At the annual Hoops for Hope game on Tuesday night, Scivetti showed that versatility notching 11 points and nine rebounds to help Cedar Grove defeat Verona, 47-42.
“It was really nice to get that win and beat Verona, but even more important was the cause we were playing for, and we wanted to do well,” said Scivetti. “It was great because we had contributions from everyone. We haven’t won the Hoops for Hope game in a few years, so it was a big, big game for us.”
With a 16-7 record, it has been a banner year for the Panthers' basketball team.
“We’ve been working really hard. We have a very good team this year and I think people have really underestimated us. We’re really tough, we don’t give up, and we have great coaching,” Scivetti said. “The biggest challenge for us is to not get frustrated on the court, to play our own game. Sometimes we speed up due to pressure from the other team, but if we stick with our own game it always works out in the end.”
Looking ahead, Cedar Grove has earned the No. 3 seed in the NJSIAA North 1, Group 1 State tournament and will host No. 14 Hasbrouck Heights on Monday at 7 p.m. Scivetti noted that one of the team’s goals was to win 18 games this season, and they have just two more to go.
“We’re hoping to win the conference title, and we’re really close to the 18th win,” Scivetti said. “It would be so great to see us accomplish that goal.”
