CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Though just a sophomore, Nick Coletta is already making a big impact for Cedar Grove High School wrestling. As a freshman he posted a 28-6 record, and he’s off to a great start this season, winning the Joe Arrotti Invitational Tournament and placing third in the Mountain Lakes Tournament. Coletta is the Allstate Cedar Grove Athlete of the Week. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Shelby Mobley, Allstate Insurance Agent, 471 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove.
“Nick is consistently one of the hardest workers in our room. He’s very coachable and his efforts in practice help him accomplish great things on the mat,” said Head Coach Rami Ratel. “He beat a state qualifier this past weekend, and he’s only a sophomore -- we expect great things from him.”
Wrestling for more than eight years, Coletta knows the work ethic needed to be successful on the mat. He credits his coach and his teammates for the early success he’s had this season.
"Coach has been working with me and my team has been pushing me and that helped get me ready to win some big matches,” Coletta said. “I’m really happy with the season so far. We’ve faced some really tough opponents and managed to come away with two wins. Everyone is really working hard in the room and pushing each other and I think we’re going to have a good season.”
Though the team has a lot of new wrestlers this year, Coletta feels that hard work in practice is paying off for the team.
“We have a lot of new guys this year, but they are really working hard and slowly but surely they are starting to improve and learn what they need to do,” Coletta noted. “I think our biggest strength is how we come together as a team. We’re all friends, and we all push each other and that energy spreads around the room and helps everyone do better.
Though the season is young, Coletta already has a favorite moment of the season -- defeating a state qualifier from Brick this past weekend. Looking ahead he has his sights set on counties and states.
“I’m definitely looking forward to counties. I took 5th last year and lost in a tough match so I’m focused on winning it this year. I’ve been working really hard and I think I can do it,” Coletta said. “And I really want to go states this year. I missed it last year, but I think I’ve got a really good shot this time if I continue to work hard.”
