CEDAR GROVE, NJ - The Cedar Grove boys soccer team is readying themselves for the State Tournament following a 10-0 victory over Veritas Christian Academy on ‘Senior Night’ on Tuesday.
“These seniors have been great for us all year…another great effort from them, and they’ve been anchoring us all season, and we’ll ride them as far as we can go,” said Head Coach Mike Konopka.
Cedar Grove dominated from start to finish of the contest. Five first half goals, including four in the first 20 minutes helped the Panthers cruise to victory. Ultimately, the decisive goal for the contest was from Massimo Saletta, who finished the game with two goals and two assists.
“It feels good to score on ‘Senior Night’ in one of the last home games,” said Massimo Saletta.
His brother Simone also collected a pair of goals, joining Massimo in the stat sheet. Both senior midfielders have been an integral part to the team’s success this year.
“Massimo & Simone [Saletta] have been playing well for us all year. They’re dominant, and they are just clicking right now,” said Konopka.
In addition to the Saletta brothers five other players managed to find the back of the net on Tuesday evening for the Panthers. The depth of the squad is something that will inevitably help them as the State Playoffs draw near.
“Right now we’re looking at the 10 seed for State Playoffs…we’re going to have to go on the road now, but with the guys we’ve got and how we’re playing I don’t think we can’t go in as a 10 seed and knock off a seven,” said Konopka.
Cedar Grove’s victory improves the squad to 10-3 on the season. The victory breaks a two-game losing streak for the squad as they will have upcoming divisional games against Newark Collegiate and Newark Tech upcoming.
“We’re anticipating a good match in both games, and we’re going to have to play our best ball,” said Konopka.
