VERONA, NJ - After two consecutive successful Championship seasons the seniors of the Verona Golf Team left very few shots out on the courses these last few years.

“This group went 10-4 their sophomore season and 12-5 their junior season,” said a proud Head Coach Eric McElroy.

The quartet of seniors on this squad were able to combine for back-to-back State Section Championships these last two years.

Ethan Triggiano was perhaps the most accomplished of the group these past few years. Triggiano averaged in the low 40s for Verona after transitioning from baseball. Last season his efforts earned him 1st Team All-Conference Honors.

“Triggiano developed into a fine golfer who I could count on to give me a score in the 40s.  He started high school as a baseball player and worked really hard to become a varsity starter as a sophomore,” said McElroy.

Joining Triggiano as a baseball transfer was Christian Dionisio. Dionisio started all matches last year for Verona and was expected to be one of the top two position players this season. Dionisio earned Second Team All-Conference Honors in 2019.

“My favorite spring sport memory would have to be winning a sectional championship in the pouring rain last year,” said Christian Dionisio.

Emily Wesser is the first of two female competitors that were solid contributors for the squad. Wesser utilized an even keeled approach to the game to keep the squad’s overall score high.

“[Wesser] brings a calm demeanor to the team…Emily will never give up on a round and was respectful to her teammates and coaches,” said McElroy.

Joining Wesser was Ashley Baumgard who brings a John Daly-like approach in power to the tee. Baumgard was expected to be a starter on the squad and gain a varsity letter once again.

“[Baumgard] brings an always happy attitude to the team, she is also able to out drive most of her other female competitors,” said McElroy.

While a lost season is never looked at positively the group can rest easily knowing that with State Titles to their name there is not many accomplishments left for them to achieve in the sport at this level.
