CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Your senior sports season is something that all high school athletes look forward to.  Sadly on May 4, the Cedar Grove High School Track & Field team found out that the season they had been prepping for was canceled and for the four seniors on the team, their high school career was over before they had a chance to celebrate it.  We are happy to give head coach Colleen Bulger and the four members of the Class of 2020 a chance to reflect on their past seasons and what they will miss most about their team.

Jack Aviles
Coach Colleen Bulger: Jack always brought a positive attitude to the team. He would participate in any event that we asked of him, because he knew it was always to help the team. He gave his all in every practice and event. We were all looking forward to seeing what he would be able to accomplish this season, being that he was injured last year.

Unfortunately Jack was injured his Junior year, so he was never able to really participate in many major varsity events. However, the short time that we had to practice during his spring season, he assisted and helped teach all the new hurdlers proper technique.

My favorite spring sport memory?

Beating Tyler Maxwell in the 400M hurdles because that was the only non-sprinting race I could beat him in. (He’s a great friend and it’s all in good fun)

Being able to run with my good friends Christopher, Tyler, etc... and competing at meets with them. I’ll also really miss hurdling I was hoping to train a lot more this year for it.

Lauren Cap
Coach Colleen Bulger:  Lauren came into track later in her high school career, but you never would have known that from the way that she carried herself. The enthusiasm she brought to everyone that she competed with was amazing. She was always proud of not only her accomplishments, but also of those around her. She worked hard, practiced and always took the advice of the coaches to better her technique.

Lauren won the SEC Championship her sophomore year in Javelin. Her junior year, she placed 2nd in Javelin and Discus at the same meet. She also placed at the Sectional Championship, and qualified to compete in the Group 1 Championship

My favorite spring sport memory?
My favorite spring sport memory is last year at the Super Essex Conference. Many great things happened that day. I placed 2nd in javelin, with two teammates placing 1st and 3rd, and placed 2nd in discus my first time ever competing in the event. In addition, the team placed in every throwing event, boys and girls, and many others on the team placed and medaled at the event. It was a great day.

The thing I will miss most about track is the atmosphere and everyone being together at the events. Yes placing and getting metals is fun, but cheering for teammates and rooting them on during an event is the best part of the track season. I have made great friends through track and I have never been on a team before that has been so supportive of one another. This is what I will miss the most.

Tyler Maxwell
Coach Colleen Bulger:  He was a reliable teammate, always willing to fill in other events that may have helped the team during dual meets. Last year, Tyler even competed in the 400m hurdles a few times to help his team out!

This season, he had been working on beating his personal records in the 3200m and 1600m, which he had already begun to do in the winter season. Most recently, Tyler placed 4th in the Indoor Super Essex Conference Championship in the 1600m.

My favorite spring sport memory?

My favorite memory from spring track would have to be after a long weekend meet, getting on the bus and talking to all my teammates about their races and how they did that day. My teammates and I would usually then head to the mall to hang out and get Blaze Pizza. Though running is why I joined track, the friends that I made during the track season are some of my closest friends and I will cherish the time I spent with them for the rest of my life.

Though I am disappointed that I never got the chance to run a 5 minute mile, I will miss the coaches and the team most of all. I was looking forward to taking on more of a leadership role in my senior year to help all the new runners get better, as well as getting a final chance to compete alongside some of the friends I have made in my track career.

Christopher Schoner
Coach Colleen Bulger:  Christopher has always been an incredible teammate. He came to every practice and competition not only looking to better himself as an athlete, but also to help push his teammates. He was always one of the loudest cheering on his teammates, and always had words of encouragement for them before and after their events.

Last year, Christopher placed and received medals in Long Jump, and the 400m at the SEC Championship. These events had occurred within minutes of each other, so it was very impressive to see him push through both events and be successful. This season, Christopher had been working to beat the 400m record at CGHS.

My favorite spring sport memory?

My favorite Memory from Track isn't one specific point in time, it's meeting all the other people who compete with you. Track is different from other sports in the sense that the atmosphere is a lot friendlier. When I see the people I am racing against I don't see them as "the other team" I see them as guys who love running as much as I do. I will never forget my time with the track team and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.  Another favorite memory is going out to eat with the team after every meet.

The thing I will miss the most is interacting with my teammates and getting to teach the freshman tips and tricks to help them do better.
