HACKENSACK, NJ – The heat wave which began yesterday is expected to last through Thursday evening, and Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco has responded by officially opening several cooling centers throughout the county to help residents stay cool this week. The Bergen County Administration Building in Hackensack, Northwest Bergen Senior Center in Midland Park, Southwest Bergen Senior in East Rutherford and Bergenfield Senior Center will all be open today, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30am until 6pm.
"It's important to make sure everyone stays cool and is hydrated during this heat wave. The County is proud to keep these buildings open at the Northwest Bergen Senior Center, Southwest Bergen Senior and Bergenfield Senior Center," said a spokesperson for County Executive Tedesco. "We welcome residents who need a place to come cool off, and encourage residents not near these locations to go to their local libraries and or municipal buildings to keep cool, because their safety is the most important thing."
It is recommended that residents stay indoors if possible from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest and burns and heat strokes are more likely to occur. All age groups are at risk for heat stroke so please take necessary precautions if you have to be outdoors, including wearing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and staying properly hydrated.
It is NOT okay to leave a child or pet in a locked vehicle even for a moment as temperatures can rise quite quickly. It is also imperative to lock all parked vehicles so children cannot accidentally lock themselves inside while playing games like hide and seek.
There are several designated cooling centers open throughout the county. Additionally, public libraries, shopping centers, recreation and senior centers can also provide respite from the high temperatures.
