WATCHUNG, NJ — Shortly after the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Wednesday afternoon, motorists began reporting that portions of Route 22 between Watchung and Scotch Plains was closed in both directions due to flooding. Some vehicles have been abandoned on the roadway in Watchung after becoming stuck in rapidly rising flood water.
“I drove through some of it because I tried to get home, but it was near impossible,” said Mike DeBisco, who was forced to stop near Bowcraft Amusement park. “You can’t go on the road now. The rain is relentless. I might need to abandon my car.”
Others are reporting flooding on local roads, too. Watchung Police have advised that New Providence Road as well as Route 22 West near Blue Star are closed due to flooding. Avoid area and do not drive into standing water.
