WARREN, NJ - In a strong statement of solidarity with kids with cancer, a group of  twelve local high school students and eleven Watchung Hills Regional High School teachers and staff shaved their heads recently at a St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraising event in Warren to raise money for childhood cancer research. This year $19,300 was raised so far by these local heroes.

The teenagers who participated in this years head shaving were Jack Horan, the team organizer, Olivia Xu – who also donated her hair to Locks of Love today, David Cantone, Tyler Carapezzi, Jeremy Cui, Tyler Fuller, Nabeel Jan, Calvin Li, Reza Malik, Nicholas O’Keefeand Arthur Paganini.  The brave WHRHS teachers and Staff who joined in this early Sunday morning fundraising were: Jon Bedi, Carl Bird, Spenser Brenn, John Dealaman, Ken Karnas, Greg Krueger, Justin Moyer, Sean New, Greg O’Reilly, Evan Oftedal and Kevin Schafer.  This year’s team also received a great deal of help from Pamela Sasso of WHRHS who spread the word throughout the school and helped recruit many shavees.

Starting in 2011 with Jack Horan, this fundraising effort has grown larger each year as new volunteers join in and many of the boys and now teachers, return annually.  With this year’s current total, $118,538 has been raised for St Baldrick’s by this local event over seven years.

The shaving team "wishes to thank our honored guest, Matthew Hall who at 17 years old is recovering from treatment for Burkitt’s Lymphoma which he was diagnosed with in October of 2016.  A student at St. Joseph High School, Matthew had been involved with St Baldrick’s fundraising events before his diagnoses and braved a frigid morning to attend the event today to share his story and inspire our team.  We also wish to thank all those who donated so generously to this wonderful Foundation."

Donations can still be made at the team’s webpage: https://www.stbaldricks.org/events/whrhsshavees

Why all the shaved heads? More children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease—in fact, more than many other childhood diseases combined. Before they turn 20, about 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will have cancer. Worldwide, a child is diagnosed every 2 minutes. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to childhood cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle against this devastating disease.

About St. Baldrick’s Foundation

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. St. Baldrick’s coordinates its signature head-shaving events worldwide where participants collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer, raising money to fund research. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $200 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, and the new International Scholar grants train researchers to work in developing countries. For more information about the St. Baldrick’s Foundation please call 1.888.899.BALD or visit www.StBaldricks.org.
