SOMERVILLE, N.J. - Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano and Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives Timothy Fitzgerald announce that a month long investigation by the Somerset County Burglary Task Force along with law enforcement agencies in the counties of Hunterdon, Middlesex and Bergen resulted in the arrest of Herbbie Sheffield, age 46, of Markham Road, Edison, N.J.

Prosecutor Soriano states that on April 1,  detectives assigned to the Somerset County Burglary Task force conducted a moving surveillance of defendant Sheffield while he was operating a motor vehicle in the area of Arden Road in Old Bridge, New Jersey. Subsequent to parking his vehicle on Arden Road, defendant Sheffield was observed exiting his vehicle and walking towards several houses. A short time later, defendant Sheffield was observed getting back into his vehicle as he departed the area. While traveling on Throckmorton Lane in Old Bridge, Task Force detectives conducted a motor vehicle stop. At that time, defendant Sheffield was found to be in possession of jewelry and coins. The investigation subsequently determined that the jewelry was taken from an Arden Road residence. Consequently, defendant Sheffield was placed under arrest and taken into custody.

As a result of the execution of a Superior Court search warrant for defendant’s person, vehicle and residence, evidence was obtained linking Sheffield to a residential burglary on Ryerson Road, Closter, N.J. which occurred on March 25. The burglary was committed during the daytime hours during which time defendant Sheffield removed electronic items, currency, jewelry, and Asian collector’s coins. The collector’s coins were those found inside defendant Sheffield’s vehicle yesterday during the execution of the search warrant.

Charges against defendant Sheffield are pending in Middlesex and Bergen Counties.

The execution of the aforementioned search warrant yielded numerous additional items of suspected stolen property. Detectives are actively attempting to identify the rightful owners of same.

Participating in and integral to this successful investigation were the police departments of Franklin Township, Readington Township, Bernardsville Borough, Bernards Township, Closter Borough, Old Bridge Township, Piscataway Township, and Bedminster Township.

Defendant Sheffield was lodged in the Somerset County Jail with bail set by the Honorable Julie M. Mariano, P.J.Cr. at $50,000.00 cash only.
