During “Women’s History Month,” SCLSNJ's Warren Township Library branch honors women with three special programs that highlight women’s roles from different perspectives.
Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m.: Living in the Muslim World: A Woman’s Perspective
Dr. Gillian Hettinger, a native of England, lived in Ryadh, Saudi Arabia for almost four years. We celebrate Women's International Day with a talk that will bring us closer to the plight of women living in the Middle East, from the perspective of a Westerner. Dr. Hettinger holds a doctorate in English literature from Drew University, and currently teaches at William Paterson University.
Saturday, March 12 at 2 p.m.: Maisie Brews a Business
This presentation by historic interpreter Maureen O’Connor Leach examines how women’s roles were changing from housewives to entrepreneurs, at the turn of the 19th century. O’Connor Leach will perform a monologue by a 1925 matron who is planning to start her own business operating a Tea Room. Maisie Stanton, in a fashionable tea frock of the era, speaks in her own candid voice about her plans and the challenges she faces as she joins the Tea Room Craze and ventures outside her traditional role. This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the NJ Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m.: Authors Panel Discussion - Women: A driving force in the publishing world
A panel of published authors Myriam Alvarez, Molly Knight Raskin, and Ingrid Stevenson will offer their insight on the business of writing and publishing. They will address the questions of the role of female authors, what women read, what women want to read, and more. The speakers bring a unique perspective gathered from experiences in the fiction, nonfiction, and memoir publishing realms. Whether you’re an author, a reader, a lifelong learner, or all of the above, you’ll enjoy this panel discussion.
