WATCHUNG, NJ – Construction has begun on the 9/11 memorial to be built at the Village Green. The town council explained at the last meeting that stone was being temporarily laid to allow construction vehicles access to the site on Monday, May 8 for the digging of the foundation.
Watchung’s 9/11 memorial will feature a heart-shaped ‘Journey of the Heart’ design incorporating a piece of steel from the World Trade Center that will be inlaid in a marble block encompassed by a half circle memorial stone wall mural. The memorial will also feature a plaque and be dedicated to everyone who died on September 11, 2001, including Watchung residents Christopher N. Ingrassia and Honor Elizabeth Wainio.
The Watchung memorial was designed by Seth Alexander with guidance from the borough’s 9/11 Committee, which includes Andy Baldasarre, Anthony Ingrassia, whose brother, Christopher Ingrassia, lost his life in the World Trade Center, Don Monetti, Dan Lorimor, Seth Alexander, Sue Tucker, Robert Gibbs, and Councilman, Bill Nehls, Councilman.
The Watchung 9/11 Memorial Committee hopes to offset construction costs with donations. They are selling memorial pavers here.
The form can also be accessed on the borough website, www.watchungnj.gov.
