CLINTON, NJ - New Jersey State Police have issued an update on the active investigation that closed I-78 on Saturday morning. Interstate 78 had been closed in both directions at milepost 19.5 in Clinton Township.

Eastbound lanes of I -78 have been reopened for travel but westbound lanes are still currently closed and traffic is being diverted at Exit 20A.  The left lane  between Exit 17 (Route 31) and Exit 24 (Route 523) westbound in Annandale has reopened to clear backed up traffic. 

Expect delays on Route 22 in both directions through the area.

Some drivers have been stuck at a standstill for hours.

"In order to dispel any misinformation that is being disseminated, we want to make it clear that no troopers or civilians have been injured in the incident being investigated on I-78 in Clinton Township. Additionally, we have received no reports of escapes from any correctional facilities," said New Jersey State Police in an update.


This is an active and ongoing investigation and additional information will be released when appropriate.
