SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging throughout New Jersey, HVAC professionals are constantly looking at ways to help reduce the spread of the virus indoors.
According to Mike Iarrapino, founder and owner of Edison Heating and Cooling, boosting fresh air, regulating humidity, and improving air purification in a home and/or business can all play a role in helping to minimize the risk of COVID-19.
"HVAC systems can have a positive and/or negative impact on air quality and while there is no 100-percent guarantee, there are ways to reduce the risk," Iarrapino said.
According to Iarrapino, reducing the amount of stale air buildup in your home, business or office space not only reducing the risk of exposure but can also boost your immune system overall.
"Poor ventilation, which requires both the removal of stale air and introduction of fresh, outdoor air in the right direction for keeping your exposure and reducing your risk of infection," he said, adding, "Proper ventilation, which requires both the removal of stale air and introduction of fresh outdoor air is a step in the right direction for keeping your exposure down and reducing your risk of infection."
Tighter humidity control can also help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Drier air, Iarrapino said, allows smaller aerosols containing the virus to remain suspended longer, exacerbating the spread of air borne viruses like COVID-19 while lower humidity also dries out mucus membranes, making one's body more welcoming to the virus as this defense mechanism is rendered impotent.
"Adding humidity to your home, ideally via a whole house system with proper control, will reduce your risk due to poor humidity," Iarrapino said.
In terms of air purification, Iarrapino recommends upgrading to a HEPA filer, which can remove particles like viruses from the air. "Individual room purifiers can help further reduce the virus count in specific areas like bedrooms," he said, noting that, prior to replacing a furnace filter one should have a professional review the fan to ensure that it can still perform as required since HEPA filters slow airflow.
"Researchers have found that the quality of the virus you are exposed to has an impact on how sick you get," said Iarrapino, adding, "While there is no 100-percent guarantee that these suggestions will prevent one from contacting COVID-19, they can all help to minimize the risk."
