WARREN, NJ — A 54-year-old father of three from Virginia died Monday night in a three-vehicle crash on I-78 West in Warren, police said.
At 7:06 p.m., police responded to mile marker 37.9. A preliminary investigation determined Kevin Hutchins of New Kent, Va, was driving westbound in a 2007 Honda Odyssey when he rear-ended a 2013 Audi S5 being driven by Joseph Calise, 36, of Hoboken, according to a police statement.
Preliminary findings indicate that the impact caused Calise's Audi to run off the road to the right and strike a tree stump. Hutchins' Honda Odyssey then rear-ended a 2010 Nissan Altima being operated by Arnold Holtz, 61, of Bridgewater, which veered off the road to the left, struck a guardrail and came to a rest in the grass medium. Hutchins' Honda then struck a tree on the right side of I-78.
Hutchins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three young boys — ages 11, 9 and 4 — riding in Hutchins' car, and Holtz were taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Calise was treated for non-life threatening injuries, at Morristown Memorial Hospital.
